Kelly Ripa began the 2012 TV Land Awards showing off her fit body in a tight cat suit, definitely different than her usual business casual attire on Live! She called Katie Couric to the stage, who presented Laverne and Shirley with the Fan Favorite Award.

Couric also did a cute re-enactment of the ever-so-famous, “Schlemiel, Schlamazzle, Hossenfeffer Incorporated.” Everyone smiled at the reference. They also displayed a tribute to the series, highlighting all of the best moments that Laverne (Penny Marshall) and Shirley (Cindy Williams) had together.

Williams told people that if they couldn’t laugh at something, they knew that the audience wouldn’t laugh at it either. Marshall added that they just wanted to entertain.

Ripa then asked the Murphy Brown cast to come accept the Impact Award. Nearly the whole cast spoke, including Candice Bergen, creator Diane English, and actress Faith Ford. Ford even joked about how she thought she had bombed the audition. (Obviously she had nothing to worry about.)

Ripa called Whoopi Goldberg up to the stage. She spoke about how In Living Color was nothing like anything else on television at the time, especially how it shattered stereotypes. There was a tribute to the Groundbreaking Award series that had the audience laughing in an uproar.

The Wayans brothers spoke about how they had the opportunity to go to work everyday and have fun. “It is amazing to see all of the talent that has come out of the show,” Keenen Wayans said. Jim Carrey explained how lucky he felt to have been sucked up into “the tsunami” that was In Living Color.

John Legend came out next to provide an introduction for Aretha Franklin who received the Icon Award. The soul songstress performed her great hits such as Chain of Fouls and Respect for an audience who was out of their seats cheering her on.

Fran Drescher took the stage to present One Day at a Time with the Innovator Award. The series was talked about as a success in putting a new concept in front of the American audience. Glenn Scarpelli took this opportunity to talk about how Mackenzie Phillips is an inspiration to everyone for being a survivor.

Schwing!!!!! Mike Myers made an appearance to present the Pop Culture Award to Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. Paul Reubens delivered his signature laugh and wore his signature red bow-tie with a gray suit. He delivered the secret word of the day, which was “gratitude.” We sure know we are grateful for Pee-Wee Herman and all the joy he has brought into our lives.

The event was peppered with delightful performances by the B-52s who sang some of their classics such as Love Shack, Roam, and Private Idaho. Overall, the night was a success. Celebrities embraced in warm hugs and shared nostalgic stories. Congratulations to all of the winners – I am sure you are all filled with Gratitude!
