The show kicks off with the Top 7 performing Pink’s Raise Your Glass, or dare I say, mangling it. Why? Why? WHY? This was painful. Have I mentioned how much I loathe the group sings? I’m sure I have. The only amusing part was the bromance of Colton and Phillip.
Next: the Ford Music Video, followed by tweets from Kelly Pickler, Jazmine Sullivan and Skylar Gray. Colton got a prom invitation, Hollie was invited to a spring formal, and Elise got feather hair jewelry, and gave one to Steven as well.
On to the results. Up first: Hollie and Jessica. Jimmy Iovine said that they are both very good technical singers, but where Jessica makes it look effortless, Hollie has learned habits that make her feel stiff and calculated, coming across as contrived and not in the right place. Hollie was sent to the right of the stage, Jessica to the left.
Season 10‘s newly blond James Durbin performed Higher Than Heaven. Metal on Idol! It’s great to see him so excited about touring.
Next: Phillip and Elise. Jimmy described them as two singer/songwriters that are character singers, not technical singers. He put both in the Bottom 3. Phillip was sent to join Hollie, and Elise was sent to join Jessica. Hmmmm.
Season 3′s Jennifer Hudson and Ne-Yo perform Think Like a Man. Jennifer is the only former Idol finalist with both a Grammy and an Oscar.
Next: Colton and Joshua. Jimmy thinks both did well last night. Joshua was natural and flawless, and Colton had needed a poignant moment, which he delivered. Both are safe according to Jimmy. Joshua was sent over to join Jessica and Elise, while Colton joined Hollie and Phillip. Hmmmmmmmm.
Let’s not forget about Skylar. Jimmy says she’s a pro, and he’s afraid that she could be left behind, though she’s a singer/songwriter AND a technical singer. He put Phillip, Elise and Hollie in the Bottom 3. (As did I).
Skylar is: SAFE! Ryan told her to pick the group she thought she belonged with. Smart young lady that she is, she refused. Ryan put her with Hollie, Colton and Phillip, which makes them all safe.
Ryan asked Jimmy for a reaction. He said that he stands by his original comments, and these 3 should not be in the Bottom 3. Randy thinks this is a ridiculous Bottom 3 (and this time he means ridiculous to actually mean RIDICULOUS!) Steven blurts out that they’ll use the card tonight with this group. Nice way to kill the suspense, Steven.
Joshua is: SAFE! At risk: Jessica Sanchez. WHAT??????????????? The looks on the judges’ faces is priceless…shock, dismay, anger. I’m sure they expected to hear Elise named.
Jessica only sang a few bars …shaky bars…of Deborah Cox’s Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here before J-Lo ripped the mic from her hand as the judges stormed the stage. They used the save. Randy said they used it “without a doubt. This girl is one of the best singers in America! Ever! Are you kidding me? Vote for the best! It’s about finding the best!”
So, the save was used. No one was eliminated. The save had to be used before the Final Five, anyway. Now the burning question becomes…will 2 go home next week? Or is this how the “extra” week due to the elimination of the “Gentle Giant” will be filled? No matter…and Jessica got to sing again anyway…this time to close the show on a happy note.
