The American Humane Association is investigating the death of a third horse that occurred during the filming of HBO’s critically acclaimed new series “Luck.”

While filming the next ten episodes on the Southern California set, a horse reared back and fell on its way to a racetrack stable and had to be euthanized. A state racing board doctor said incidents like this are a common occurrence in stables every year but the AHA will still be conducting a routine necropsy.

Two other horses died during filming in 2010 and 2011.

An AHA safety representative was at the track when the accident occurred, and according to an HBO spokesperson, “as always, all safety precautions were in place.” The rep said that the network is “deeply saddened” by the animal’s death.

The first-year drama starring Dustin Hoffman and Nick Holte received a second season pick-up. Filming of the show that does not involve animals will continue until the investigation is complete.
